KCN WebMaster Joins Kids in Heaven

Matt S., our Kids Cancer Network webmaster for the past 7 years, has left this earth. He died peacefully of a brain tumor just days ago. His community of friends and church family will miss him greatly. We send our prayers for his young wife and pre-school daughter who were the joy of his life.

Matt was an amazingly creative and funny person! He loved God and those around him and always brought a smile to our faces. He did much of his work for Kids Cancer Network at reduced rates because he had so much compassion for the kids we serve.

When you visit the KCN website, enjoy the creative and beautiful layout and say a prayer for those who loved Matt... he is laughing with Jesus now.

Candlelighters Supports World Cancer Day:

In support of the World Cancer Day Awareness Campaign (Feb. 4th), Candlelighters is proud to announce the website release of a photo essay focused on the impact of childhood cancer in the United States.

The photo essay can be viewed both as a 30 second PSA (Public Service Announcement) as well as a 2 1/2 minute video by clicking on the following link: http://www.candlelighters.org/PhotoEssay.stm

Candlelighters would like to express our deepest appreciation to Photographer - Jed Share, Producer - Trevor Romain, Editor - Stephen Bohls, Musician - Doug Burns, as well as to Dr. Nita Sibel and the cancer children from Children's National Medical Center, Washington DC who shared their journey with us.  A deep appreciation is also extended to those families who shared feedback describing the impact of the cancer diagnosis on their child's life.

YOU TOO CAN JOIN IN BUILDING AWARENESS!  Please help build awareness of the difficult battle that America's youngest cancer patients face each day, by spreading word about this video.  Please forward the link to your local members of Congress, your place of business, cancer representatives at other cancer organizations such as the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, other cancer families, cancer listservs, as well as to your friends and families.  TOGETHER as families who have 'walked this walk' we can help build awareness of the true devastation that this disease has on the lives of our nation's cancer children!

... because kids can't fight cancer alone!

This year marks the launch of the UICC World Cancer Campaign focused on childhood cancer (see www.uicc.org ).

The World Cancer Campaign calls for an invincible alliance between researchers, healthcare professionals, patients, government, industry and media, to fight cancer and its greatest allies which are fear, ignorance and complacency.

The World Cancer Campaign theme for 2006 will be "My Child Matters" (www.mychildmatters.org ). Focused on the international impact of childhood cancer, the campaign consists of three main components: 1) support for research initiatives to reduce childhood cancer mortality and morbidity in developing countries; 2) a comprehensive state-of-the-art report on childhood cancers which will be made available to the general public on World Cancer Day, 4 February 2006; 3) and a worldwide mobilization and awareness campaign, to highlight the effects of childhood cancers on children and their families.

Some important childhood cancer facts:
Childhood cancer is rare, but highly treatable.
Each year, more than 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer and approximately 90,000 die of cancer.
Childhood cancer is relatively rare.

In the 1990s, age-standardised incidence rates were 140 per million for European children (0–14 years); ASR rates for the 52 countries in the 1998 IARC study on the international incidence of childhood cancer have a rough average of 120 per million.

Childhood cancer responds well to prompt and effective treatment
In the USA, childhood cancer was almost uniformly fatal before the mid-1960s, but survival rates improved to 55% in the 1970s and better than 75% in the 1990s.

In Europe, 5-year survival rates improved from 44% for children diagnosed in the 1970s to 64% for children diagnosed in the 1980s and 74% for children diagnosed in the 1990s.

Improved survival rates are largely due to better treatment and improved quality of care. Chemotherapy was introduced for the treatment of childhood leukemia in the 1940s and has been incorporated into treatment regimes that previously relied on surgery or radiotherapy for other common childhood cancers. In the USA, seven out of ten children now receive their care in special pediatric cancer treatment centers.

Kids Cancer Network has entered a new phase of service! Our programs, resources and prayers will be available online... and our staff will now be available on a volunteer basis as Founders Kenon & Matt Neal spend more time with their three growing children.

It has been a joy and a privilege to serve children with cancer and their families over the last 13 years. What a blessing to use the cancer experience in a positive way to uplift and encourage others! Please feel free to email additional nationally available services and resources and we will gladly consider them for inclusion on our website.

Wondering how you can increase awareness of childhood cancer? How about adding a childhood cancer awareness magnet to the back of your vehicle?

Three different Awareness magnets are now available on Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation's website by clicking on the store link.

For $5.00 you can help build awareness of childhood cancer simply while driving your car or van.

Help build childhood cancer awareness, while supporting Candlelighters programs across the country. All proceeds from sales are directed back to supporting programs for cancer children and their families.  ...
